Travel to Dubai

Car, bus, metro, tram, water taxis, and driving licenses: understanding the main mobility options in the Emirates.

Dubai has a modern transportation network that reflects its status as a cosmopolitan city. The available solutions combine public transportation, individual mobility, and well-developed road infrastructure.

Whether you want to drive, use public transportation, or travel along the Creek, several options make it easy to get around Dubai and the United Arab Emirates more broadly.

How to get around Dubai?

Six main transport options are available in Dubai.

Car & taxi

The road network is excellent. You can use your own vehicle or take a taxi. However, remain vigilant regarding accidents and traffic jams.

Bus

There are numerous bus lines, generally operating from 6 a.m. to midnight.

Subway

Economical and fully automated, the metro is especially convenient for avoiding traffic jams during rush hour.

Water buses & water taxis

Several lines allow crossings on the Creek and offer an alternative to land transportation.

Palm Jumeirah Monorail

The Palm Jumeirah Monorail provides a quick connection to the mainland from Palm Jumeirah.

Tramway & airport

The tramway complements the local mobility options. For international travel, Dubai International Airport is located a few kilometers from the city center.

Is it possible to drive in Dubai with a visa?

Once you have obtained your residence and work visa, you can drive in Dubai, but you must obtain an Emirati driving license to comply with the law.

Depending on your nationality, your original license may be exchanged directly for an Emirati license. For other nationalities, you may need to retake the theory test and driving test.

French nationals do not have to retake either the theory test or the driving test: the process can be completed by presenting a valid visa and Emirates ID.

Once you have obtained your Emirati license, you will be able to rent or purchase a vehicle in your name or your company’s name. It is also recommended that you choose suitable insurance, given the risk of accidents on Dubai’s roads.
